Arthritis in canines is a degenerative joint disease. It affects the bone, cartilage and surrounding tissue. Over time Cartilage becomes more prone to breaking. Some dogs are prone to hip dysplasia or ligament damage. Tick infections can also cause cartilage damage. Older dogs tend to show the symptoms of arthritis; hard to stand, stiffness, or a lack of interest in play and romping. Obesity is one of the leading causes of arthritis in pets as in humans. Overeating and lack of exercise are a great contributor of increased longevity with many health problems.
If you own a dog of large or giant breed it is especially important to feed them appropriate diets, when fed large amounts of proteins and calcium they will almost certainly devolop orthopedic problems.
Exercise is a must for all dogs. I have found personally that it is much easier to maintain a exercise program, like daily walking, if you do it with your best friend. It is important to remember to warm up your dogs muscles , so start walking slowly and gradually increase your speed. To help treat arthritis in dogs is basically the same as humans. A healthy diet and exercise. Nsaids are commonly used. Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate help to relieve symptoms in humans as well as caines. I have a wide variety of products on my site for arthritis in particular as well as foods, treats, other nutritional suppliments. Pets2Love.net
